Unskilled Occupations

Some industries fall under the category of Unskilled Occupations as specified by the US Department of State. They include:

Please note that USIT and CIEE understand a programme participant may need to train in one of the above areas in order to gain experience thorough knowledge of daily processes/business in a particular sector. Training in any of the above areas is permissible provided the duration of the task does not account for more than a quarter of the entire training period and that the trainees moves on to a managerial role in that department. If you require further clarification, please contact us at internshipusa@usit.ie.

Prohibited J-1 Jobs

In addition to the above, the occupations listed below are prohibited to holders of J-1 Visas. The following is a list of unacceptable positions as of 03/12/2003.

Please note that applicants can obtain traineeships in some of the above sectors, provided there is no element of hands-on treatment/coaching. Their training must be of an observational and/or shadowing nature, but under no circumstances is any physical contact allowed. For example, in some cases host companies choose to have the trainee follow several particular cases and write a report on the processes/treatments available, noting what methods they would employ and stating their reasons for doing so. If you require further clarification, please contact us at internshipusa@usit.ie.
